My Son Cut His Hair After 9 Years – A Big Step in Our Worldschooling Journey
This does not happen very often, but I felt I really needed to share this story.
Just two weeks ago, my son came to me and said for the first time in 9 years:
“Mom, I want to cut my hair.”
For many people, this might not sound like a big moment. But for us, it was emotional, meaningful, and part of a much bigger journey.
Why My Son Had Long Hair
When my son was little, I never cut his hair short just because he was a boy. I also never forced him to cut it because he simply did not want to.
He would always say:
“Mom, I love my hair. Why do I need to cut it?”
And my answer was always simple:
“You don’t have to if you don’t want to.”
Over the years, many people thought he was a girl because of his long hair. It happened again and again. This is often how society thinks, people like to put others into boxes based on how they look.
But boys can have long hair too. Why not?
Learning to Be Yourself
There were times when he became frustrated with people constantly asking:
“Why don’t you cut your hair?”
Most of the time, he would just walk away and ignore the comments.
There were also moments when other children judged him or thought he was a girl, and at one point it did start to bother him. I remember asking him:
“Do you want to cut your hair because you want to, or because of what other people think?”
His answer stayed with me:
“I will not change myself for others.”
That moment became a lesson about confidence, friendships, and being yourself. He learned that real friends accept you for who you are without judging how you look.
Breaking Old Parenting Patterns
Many adults asked me why I did not make him cut his hair.
My answer was always:
“Why should I change him if he is happy being himself?”
I grew up differently. My parents would have told me how to look, how to behave, and what was acceptable. Over time, that made my self-confidence very low because I always felt like I had to fit into someone else’s box.
Today, I choose a different path with my own child.
And over the years, I have seen how powerful it is when children are allowed to truly be themselves.
What Worldschooling Means to Us
For me, worldschooling is not only about travel, education, or learning from the world.
It is also about:
self-growth
confidence
individuality
freedom to explore who you are
learning life skills
understanding emotions and relationships
Sometimes the biggest lessons are not found in books.
A Huge Emotional Step for Me as a Mom
Going to the barber that day was emotional for me too.
It felt like we were closing one chapter and stepping into another. Almost like letting go of part of his childhood.
I know it sounds silly to some people because “it is just hair,” but for us it carried years of memories, growth, and meaning.
It reminded me of those parenting moments that stay in your heart forever — like when your child loses their first tooth. Except this felt even deeper emotionally.
We are moving into a new stage now. Letting go of old moments, growing into new ones, and accepting change together.
The Most Beautiful Part of This Story
What made this moment so special was seeing his face after the haircut.
He looked happy. Relieved. Excited.
And the reason this moment mattered so much was because it was his choice.
If I had forced him to cut his hair over the years, every barber visit would have been full of tears, frustration, and pressure. Instead, this became a positive memory filled with confidence and excitement.
That is why this moment felt so precious to me.
Because he was ready.
Not because the world told him to be.
